North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has expressed unwavering support for Russia’s military actions in Ukraine, describing them as a legitimate response to foreign intervention. During a meeting with Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov in Pyongyang, Kim reaffirmed North Korea’s commitment to bolstering military ties with Moscow, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Support for Russia’s Sovereignty

Kim stated that North Korea would “invariably support” Russia in its efforts to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity against what he called “imperialist moves for hegemony.” He also criticized the United States, accusing it of escalating the conflict by supplying Ukraine with long-range weaponry and encouraging strikes on Russian territory. Kim denounced these actions as “irresponsible” and a direct intervention in the war.

Deepening Military Ties

The meeting highlighted the growing strategic partnership between North Korea and Russia. Reports suggest that Pyongyang has supplied thousands of troops and weapons, including artillery systems and missiles, to support Moscow’s war effort. Although neither country has officially confirmed these claims, analysts believe North Korean troops are already engaging in combat on the front lines in Ukraine.

Additionally, South Korea and its allies have raised concerns about a potential exchange of advanced military technologies. Russia may be offering air defence systems and economic aid to North Korea in return for its military support. Such exchanges could significantly enhance Pyongyang’s capabilities, including its nuclear weapons program and space-based surveillance systems.

A United Front Against the West

Kim praised recent Russian strikes on Ukraine as a demonstration of Moscow’s resolve and framed NATO’s eastward expansion as reckless. He reiterated that the partnership between North Korea and Russia is a response to what both nations perceive as Western aggression. This alliance was formalized in June with a mutual defence treaty, marking one of the most significant military agreements between the two nations since the Cold War.

Global Implications

The strengthening ties between North Korea and Russia have drawn criticism and concern from the United States, South Korea, and NATO. Analysts warn that this partnership could destabilize regional security and further complicate international efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
