A powerful 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck southwest Japan late Monday night, triggering a tsunami advisory and sending residents into a state of heightened alert. While the advisory has now been lifted, authorities are warning that the danger isn’t entirely over.
The Earthquake and Tsunami Alert
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that the earthquake hit off the coast of Kyushu at 9:19 p.m. local time (7:19 a.m. ET). The tremor triggered a tsunami advisory for Miyazaki Prefecture on Kyushu Island and Kochi Prefecture in the south.
Within 30 minutes, an initial tsunami wave measuring approximately 1 meter (3.2 feet) reached the shore. Thankfully, the advisory was lifted later in the evening. However, officials are urging caution near coastal areas, warning that second and third waves could still be higher than the first.
What Happens Next?
Although the immediate tsunami threat has passed, experts aren’t ruling out aftershocks or further seismic activity. The JMA has advised residents to remain vigilant, as landslides, falling rocks, and cliff collapses could still occur, especially if another earthquake of similar magnitude strikes.
Officials have also reminded the public that Japan sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a hotspot for earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. This means strong quakes are always a possibility, and preparedness is crucial.

This latest earthquake is a stark reminder of Japan’s vulnerability to seismic disasters. Last summer, the JMA issued a megathrust earthquake alert after tremors shook parts of western Japan, originating from the Hyuga-nada Sea—the same region where this latest quake struck.
