Apple has temporarily disabled its AI-powered news summary feature in the latest beta versions of iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3. This decision comes after multiple instances where the AI system produced inaccurate and misleading news notifications, leading to public criticism and concerns over misinformation.
The AI feature, introduced as part of Apple’s efforts to streamline information delivery, was designed to condense multiple news notifications into concise summaries. However, several errors have been reported.
Notably, an AI-generated notification falsely claimed that tennis star Rafael Nadal had come out as gay, confusing him with Brazilian player Joao Lucas Reis da Silva. In another instance, the AI inaccurately summarized a BBC news alert, leading to a misleading notification.
In response to these issues, Apple stated, “With the latest beta software releases… Notification summaries for the News & Entertainment category will be temporarily unavailable.” The company is actively working on improvements and plans to reintroduce the feature in a future software update.

The suspension of this feature underscores the challenges tech companies face in implementing AI technologies responsibly. Ensuring the accuracy of AI-generated content is crucial, especially when disseminating news, as errors can erode public trust and contribute to the spread of misinformation.
Apple’s decision to pause the AI summaries has been met with approval from news organizations. A BBC spokesperson commented, “We’re pleased that Apple has listened to our concerns and is pausing the summarisation feature for news… Our priority is the accuracy of the news we deliver to audiences which is essential to building and maintaining trust.”
As Apple works on refining its AI capabilities, users are advised to stay informed through official channels and be cautious of potential inaccuracies in automated summaries. The company has not specified a timeline for the reintroduction of the feature but assures that enhancements are underway to prevent future errors.
