Russian forces have significantly escalated their offensive in eastern Ukraine, marking the most intense combat surge of 2025, according to Kyiv’s military. With critical peace talks on the horizon, NATO officials anticipate an even stronger push from Moscow, raising concerns over Ukraine’s ability to hold the front lines.
Unprecedented Combat Surge in 2025
Over the past 24 hours, Ukraine reported 261 engagements with Russian forces—more than double the previous daily average. The primary battleground remains Pokrovsk, a strategic logistics hub, where Ukrainian forces are struggling to maintain control. Although the number of engagements slightly declined to 117 by Sunday evening, the situation remains dire, with continuous clashes in key areas like Vodiane Druhe.
Russia’s military confirmed the capture of Berezivka, a village northeast of Pokrovsk, marking another territorial gain. Ukrainian forces, however, reported counteroffensive successes, including the recapture of Pishchane, a critical settlement south of Pokrovsk.
Russia’s Expanding Offensive
Since mid-2024, Russian troops have steadily advanced, capturing village after village in the eastern region. Their recent focus has shifted south of Pokrovsk, threatening a key Ukrainian supply route. If Russia secures this area, it could open new attack pathways, further pressuring Ukrainian defenses.
Despite these setbacks, President Volodymyr Zelensky remains optimistic, citing strategic improvements within Ukraine’s military operations. Military spokesman Viktor Trehubov noted that organizational changes have enhanced Ukraine’s battlefield effectiveness, rather than a sudden shift in Russian weaknesses.
NATO Anticipates a Stronger Russian Push
As diplomatic efforts intensify, a NATO official, speaking anonymously, warned of an imminent surge in Russian attacks. This escalation is believed to be a tactical move to strengthen Moscow’s position ahead of high-stakes negotiations.

U.S. and Russian representatives are expected to meet in Saudi Arabia soon, with President Donald Trump advocating for direct peace talks. However, Kyiv has expressed unease over being sidelined in these discussions, emphasizing the need for coordination with European allies before engaging with Russia.
Europe’s Growing Concerns
France has announced an emergency summit with European leaders to discuss security and diplomatic strategies. European officials are increasingly alarmed by Trump’s unilateral approach to the crisis, which excludes key stakeholders from the peace process.
Meanwhile, Russia has intensified its aerial campaign, launching approximately 1,220 aerial bombs, 850 drones, and 40 missiles over the past week. This marks a sharp increase from the previous week’s attacks, indicating a calculated attempt to weaken Ukraine’s defenses.
With the battlefield dynamics shifting rapidly, all eyes remain on the upcoming diplomatic talks and whether they can bring any meaningful resolution to the prolonged conflict.
