The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has officially linked North Korea to the massive $1.5 billion cryptocurrency theft from exchange platform ByBit. In a statement released on Wednesday, the agency attributed the attack to a North Korean cybercriminal group known as “TraderTraitor.”
How the Attack Happened
The FBI revealed that the hackers quickly converted portions of the stolen assets into bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, spreading them across thousands of blockchain addresses to evade detection. According to the report, these digital assets are expected to be further laundered and eventually exchanged for fiat currency.
ByBit, a major crypto exchange serving over 60 million users worldwide, disclosed last Friday that an attacker had gained access to an ether wallet. The stolen funds were then transferred to an unidentified address, making it difficult to track the perpetrators immediately.
