Trump Warns Russia of ‘Large-Scale’ Sanctions After Devastating Attack on Ukraine

Tensions between the United States, Russia, and Ukraine continue to escalate as President Donald Trump threatens Moscow with new sanctions following a massive Russian missile attack on the Ukrainian port city of Odessa. The strike, which ignited fires and damaged critical energy infrastructure, has drawn strong condemnation worldwide.

Despite weeks of softening U.S. support for Ukraine, Trump now says he is considering severe economic penalties against Russia. However, his mixed messages on Ukraine’s defense raise questions about his administration’s long-term commitment.

Trump Threatens Tougher Sanctions—But Is It Just Talk?

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump acknowledged that Russia is “absolutely pounding” Ukraine on the battlefield. He announced that he is “considering large-scale banking sanctions, trade tariffs, and other restrictions” on Moscow.

However, he made it clear that these measures would only remain in place until Russia and Ukraine agree on a ceasefire and a final peace deal. Trump urged both sides to negotiate immediately, saying, “Get to the table right now, before it is too late.”

Does Trump Believe Putin Wants Peace?

During a press conference in the Oval Office on Friday, Trump told reporters that he still believes Russian President Vladimir Putin wants peace, based on private statements from the Kremlin.

At the same time, he admitted that Russia is “bombing the hell out of Ukraine” but insisted that the U.S. is “doing very well with Russia.”

However, his stance on Ukraine appears increasingly critical and dismissive. He said, “I’m finding it more difficult to deal with Ukraine. They don’t have the cards.” When pressed about whether Putin is exploiting Trump’s decision to halt military aid, he responded, “I think he’s doing what anybody else would do.”

No More Defensive Weapons for Ukraine?

Despite the escalating attacks, Trump remains firm in his decision to block U.S. military aid to Ukraine. He argues that Ukraine must show a willingness to settle with Russia before receiving further assistance.

“If they don’t want to settle, we’re out of there because we want them to settle,” Trump stated.

His remarks have fueled concerns that the U.S. is pressuring Ukraine to surrender territory rather than providing the resources needed to defend itself.

Can More Sanctions Actually Hurt Russia?

Trump’s latest threat of additional sanctions raises doubts about their effectiveness. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the U.S., European Union, and other Western nations have imposed crippling financial sanctions.

Yet, these restrictions have failed to stop Russia’s war machine because Putin has successfully secured military support from Iran and North Korea.

Surprisingly, despite publicly threatening harsher economic penalties, Trump has privately discussed lifting certain sanctions on Russia in exchange for peace negotiations.

Fallout from Trump’s Tense Meeting with Zelenskyy

Trump’s relationship with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also hit a new low. Just last week, a scheduled Oval Office meeting between the two leaders ended abruptly. After a heated exchange, Zelenskyy was asked to leave the White House without signing a key mineral rights deal—an agreement meant to strengthen U.S.-Ukraine economic ties.

On Monday, Trump took to Truth Social to attack Zelenskyy, saying the U.S. “will not put up with” his attitude for much longer. But in a contradictory statement on Tuesday, he told members of Congress that he was “working tirelessly to end the savage conflict” and claimed that Zelenskyy had written him a letter expressing readiness to negotiate peace.

What’s Next? Key Talks in Saudi Arabia

U.S. and Ukrainian officials are scheduled to meet next week in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for another round of negotiations. With Trump’s unpredictable stance and Putin showing no signs of backing down, the outcome remains uncertain.

Will Trump’s sanctions threat push Russia toward peace talks, or is it just another political maneuver?
