A devastating overnight drone attack on Kyiv by Russian forces has left at least seven people injured and set multiple buildings ablaze, Ukrainian officials reported early Sunday. The strike, which targeted residential areas, resulted in widespread damage and forced emergency responders to battle fires across the capital.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko described the attack as a “massive enemy drone assault,” emphasizing the scale of the destruction in a statement on Telegram. He confirmed that seven civilians had been wounded, with one requiring hospitalization.

Falling debris from downed drones ignited fires in several high-rise apartment buildings, particularly in the historic Podil district and the Dniprovskyi district across the Dnipro River. Emergency services rushed to multiple locations to contain the blazes and assist affected residents.

Air Defenses Engage as Explosions Rock the City

The exact scale of the attack remains unclear, but Reuters journalists on the ground reported hearing a series of loud explosions, suggesting that Ukrainian air defenses were actively intercepting incoming drones.

In addition to injuries within Kyiv, two more civilians were hurt and several houses sustained damage in surrounding regions, according to regional governor Mykola Kalashnik. Air raid sirens blared across Kyiv and eastern Ukraine for over five hours, signaling the severity of the strike.

No Comment from Russia Amid Rising Tensions

So far, Russian authorities have not issued any official response regarding the attack. While both Moscow and Kyiv deny deliberately targeting civilians, the ongoing war—now in its third year—has continued to devastate Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.

As the violence escalates, diplomatic efforts to negotiate a truce remain uncertain. The United States is pushing for a partial ceasefire to prevent further strikes on critical infrastructure, but both sides continue to report ongoing military engagements.

Ukraine Faces Prolonged Air Raids

This latest assault highlights the persistent threat Ukraine faces from drone and missile attacks, particularly in its major cities. Residents of Kyiv have endured frequent air raids, power outages, and destruction of residential buildings as the conflict rages on.
