German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has reaffirmed that the European Union will take decisive action against tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump but remains open to dialogue.
Speaking ahead of the Hanover trade fair, Scholz made it clear that the EU would not back down from a firm response. “As the European Union, we will react clearly and decisively to the United States’ tariff policies,” he stated. However, he emphasized that Europe still prefers collaboration over conflict. “Our priority remains cooperation, but if the U.S. forces our hand—like it did with tariffs on steel and aluminum—we will respond as a united front.”
The announcement follows Trump’s latest move to impose a 25% tariff on auto imports, which will take effect next week. This measure comes after a similar 25% tariff on steel and aluminum, which the U.S. implemented in March. The EU is preparing countermeasures, set to begin in April.
Germany Braces for Impact
As one of the world’s largest automobile exporters, Germany is particularly vulnerable to these new tariffs. In response, German Finance Minister Joerg Kukies recently traveled to Washington to discuss the situation, signaling Berlin’s commitment to finding a solution.
A government spokesperson has already warned that Germany is prepared to take strong retaliatory steps, stating that “nothing is off the table.”
While Germany is gearing up for a tough stance, other European leaders are taking a more cautious approach. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has urged for a “reasoned” response, hoping to de-escalate tensions rather than escalate them. Similarly, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has expressed deep regret over the U.S. tariffs and reiterated the EU’s preference for a negotiated settlement.
Scholz Responds to Trump’s Canada Comment

During his speech at the Hanover trade fair, Scholz also took a moment to respond to Trump’s recent claim that Canada should become the 51st U.S. state. The German Chancellor dismissed the idea, stating:
“Canada is a proud, independent nation. It has strong friendships worldwide, particularly with Germany and the EU.”
Canada is this year’s special guest at the Hanover trade fair, an event that serves as a platform for global economic discussions and innovation.
What’s Next?
As the tariff dispute escalates, all eyes are on how the EU will respond if the U.S. moves forward with the auto import levies. While European leaders continue to push for dialogue, the message from Germany is clear: if necessary, the EU will retaliate with full force.
