Final Journey of a Beloved Pope: Francis’ Body Transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica Ahead of Historic Funeral

In a deeply moving and historic ceremony, the body of Pope Francis was transferred today from his residence at Santa Marta to St. Peter’s Basilica, where it will lie in state until Friday evening. The late pontiff passed away peacefully two days ago at the age of 88 after suffering a stroke.

The solemn procession, attended by high-ranking clergy and watched by thousands, began with red-robed cardinals, priests, and candle-bearing friars walking slowly behind the pope’s open coffin. The procession was set to the haunting sound of Latin psalms and prayers, echoing across the sunlit expanse of St. Peter’s Square as the basilica bells tolled in mourning.

Pope Francis, who had been widely admired for his progressive views and commitment to inclusivity, was carried on a wooden platform by 14 pallbearers dressed in black suits and white gloves. The Swiss Guards stood in solemn formation, honoring the memory of a pope who had deeply touched the lives of millions.

“Dear brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow we now accompany the mortal remains of our Pope Francis to the Vatican Basilica,” said Cardinal Kevin Farrell, a key figure in the Vatican and close ally of the late pope.

As the coffin made its way through the square, thousands of faithful pilgrims and locals broke into spontaneous applause—an Italian tradition signifying profound respect and reverence.

Just days before his passing, Pope Francis surprised many by making a final appearance in his white, open-topped popemobile, waving to the crowd during Sunday’s blessing. Despite having spent five weeks in the hospital earlier this year battling double pneumonia, his last public moment showed his enduring connection with the people.

“He felt like a member of the family,” said Rachel McKay, a British pilgrim. “He made the Church feel open and welcoming to everyone. He was someone truly close to our hearts.”

His funeral, scheduled for Saturday, is expected to be one of the most attended papal funerals in history. Over 200,000 mourners are anticipated, including heads of state and dignitaries from around the world. Notably, former U.S. President Donald Trump—despite having had ideological clashes with the pope—will be in attendance, alongside leaders from Italy, France, Germany, the UK, the EU, Ukraine, and Argentina.

Following the funeral, a conclave of cardinals will gather to elect the next pope. This is not expected before May 6, as Church officials deliberate on the transition during what is known as the sede vacante—the period when the seat of the papacy is vacant.

Speculation on Pope Francis’ successor is already underway. Early favorites include Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of the Philippines and Cardinal Pietro Parolin of Italy. However, no clear frontrunner has emerged.

Until a new pope is chosen, Cardinal Farrell will oversee the Church’s daily operations.

As the world prepares to say its final farewell, Pope Francis leaves behind a powerful legacy of compassion, humility, and change—qualities that redefined the papacy for a new generation.
