Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping recently held a high-level video call to discuss critical global issues, including their relationships with Donald Trump, prospects for peace in Ukraine, and China’s stance on Taiwan. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the Russia-China partnership, which continues to unsettle Western nations.
Strengthening the Russia-China Alliance
The call, which lasted over 90 minutes, underscored the close relationship between the two leaders. Putin and Xi referred to each other as “dear friends” and discussed strategies to enhance their “no limits” partnership.
This alliance was first declared in February 2022, just before Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine. Since then, China has remained a crucial ally to Russia, particularly as Western sanctions have intensified.
Both leaders expressed a willingness to engage with the new U.S. administration under Donald Trump, provided the interactions are mutually beneficial and respectful. Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov stated, “We are ready for dialogue with the U.S. on the Ukrainian conflict if the Trump team demonstrates genuine interest.”
Dialogue on Ukraine
The Ukrainian war remains a central point of contention. Putin emphasized his desire for a long-term peace deal that aligns with Russia’s strategic interests, dismissing the idea of a short-term ceasefire. Meanwhile, Xi reiterated China’s call for peace talks, accusing the U.S. of prolonging the war by supplying arms to Ukraine.
Trump has publicly criticized Russia’s actions in Ukraine and has suggested that resolving the conflict will be a priority for his administration. His rhetoric, combined with Putin’s acknowledgment of China’s pivotal role in global affairs, could signal a shift in how negotiations evolve in the coming months.
Taiwan: A Shared Vision
The leaders also discussed Taiwan, with Putin reaffirming Russia’s unwavering support for China’s “One-China” policy. This comes as Xi continues to stress China’s intent to unify Taiwan with the mainland, despite Taiwan’s government rejecting Beijing’s claims.

Russia and China’s economic relationship remains strong, particularly in energy. China is the largest consumer of Russian oil and a key market for Russian energy exports. During the call, both leaders confirmed plans to collaborate on advanced nuclear technologies, including fast neutron reactors and nuclear fuel reprocessing.

Putin and Xi share a vision that portrays the West as declining while advocating for a multipolar global order. Putin noted their shared efforts to create a “just and indivisible security framework” in Eurasia and beyond.
