French authorities have launched an investigation into X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, over allegations of algorithmic bias. The probe, announced on Friday, comes amid increasing global concerns about the influence of tech platforms and their role in shaping public discourse.
Why Is X Under Investigation?
According to the Paris prosecutor’s office, the investigation began after a French lawmaker raised concerns about potential bias in X’s algorithms, which could be manipulating the way content is processed and displayed. The complaint, filed on January 12, suggests that these alleged biases may have impacted the operation of an automated data processing system.
This investigation highlights growing scrutiny of Musk’s X, formerly known as Twitter, which has been at the center of multiple controversies since its rebranding. Critics argue that Musk’s personal political endorsements—often favoring right-wing figures—raise concerns about the platform’s neutrality.
A Timely Investigation Before Paris AI Summit
The timing of this probe is particularly significant, as it comes just days before an international AI summit in Paris. The event is expected to attract top global leaders, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and executives from tech giants like Alphabet and Microsoft. Discussions on AI ethics and governance will be a major focus, making the allegations against X even more relevant.
French Lawmaker’s Role in the Case
Eric Bothorel, a centrist lawmaker in France, played a key role in initiating the investigation. He publicly stated on X that he had contacted the Paris prosecutor’s J3 cybercrime unit regarding the alleged bias in X’s algorithms.
“Prosecutors and specialists from the cybercrime unit are analyzing the case and conducting initial technical evaluations,” the Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed in a statement.
The J3 cybercrime unit has a track record of aggressively pursuing cases involving digital platforms. Notably, the same unit led last year’s legal action against Telegram’s founder, Pavel Durov, over concerns about illegal content. This suggests that the French government is taking a firm stance against potential digital misconduct.

Musk and X Remain Silent
Despite the seriousness of the allegations, neither X nor Elon Musk has responded to requests for comment. Musk, known for his vocal presence on social media, has previously defended X as a platform for free speech. However, this investigation could further intensify regulatory pressures on the billionaire’s social media venture.
Past Controversies and Regulatory Scrutiny
This isn’t the first time X has faced scrutiny over content moderation and platform governance. Last year, Brazil blocked the platform for over a month due to its failure to combat misinformation. X was only reinstated after complying with a Supreme Court order.
With rising concerns over algorithmic bias and political interference, this French investigation could set a precedent for future legal actions against major tech platforms. Whether X is found guilty of manipulating its algorithms remains to be seen, but this case is likely to fuel the ongoing debate about the role of social media in shaping public narratives.
