Ceasefire Shattered: Pakistan Launches Drone Attacks on India Hours After Truce Agreement

Just hours after India and Pakistan declared a ceasefire, the fragile truce was shattered as Pakistan launched a wave of drone attacks and artillery shelling across multiple Indian cities and border areas. The sudden escalation has triggered a nationwide alert and raised serious concerns over Islamabad’s intentions.

On Saturday, May 10, 2025, a swarm of drones entered Indian airspace, targeting regions in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan. Explosions were reported in Srinagar, prompting a red alert and complete blackout in the area. Authorities confirmed that one drone was successfully shot down in Rajasthan’s Pokhran, while another was neutralized in Baramulla, Kashmir.

Artillery shelling was also reported along the International Border and the Line of Control (LoC), especially in the Akhnoor, Rajouri, RS Pura, and Palanwalla sectors of Jammu. In a clear violation of the ceasefire, the Pakistan Army opened fire just hours after an official truce was reached between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both nations.

The situation quickly escalated as aerial threats spread to several regions. Drones were spotted in Rajouri, and air raid sirens blared in the Samba district. In Baramulla and Srinagar, residents were advised to stay indoors amid blackout orders.

Pilgrimage town Katra, home to the revered Mata Vaishno Devi temple, also reported aerial disturbances, prompting emergency security measures. Punjab wasn’t spared either — drone sightings were confirmed in Gurdaspur, Ferozepur, Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, and Faridkot. Local administrations in Jalandhar and Ludhiana issued warnings, urging voluntary blackouts and advising citizens to remain indoors.

“This is not a ceasefire,” said a visibly distressed Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Taking to social media, he posted: “What the hell just happened to the ceasefire? Explosions heard across Srinagar!!! The air defence units in the middle of Srinagar just opened up.” He also shared footage of the chaos triggered by the drone attacks.

The shelling and drone activity reportedly lasted for over an hour before coming to a halt. Security agencies are now on high alert across all affected regions, and the Border Security Force (BSF) has been directed to respond aggressively to any further provocation.

The ceasefire, initially seen as a hopeful turning point in India-Pakistan relations following the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, was short-lived. It was Pakistan that initiated the talks, and the agreement had been reached in what seemed like a rare diplomatic breakthrough. Sadly, this sudden breach highlights the deep-rooted mistrust and volatility that continue to haunt the subcontinent.

As tensions flare up again, citizens and security forces alike are bracing for what could be a longer and more complex confrontation.
